Agave Farming in Far North Queensland: A New Kind of Agricultural Work
Growing agave for spirit is still a small, specialised corner of Queensland agriculture.
Unlike annual crops, agave farming for spirit means years-long cycles, planting, tending and eventually harvesting a plant that takes its own time to mature.
On the Tablelands, that work sits alongside more familiar regional agriculture, dairy, coffee, tropical fruit, as a genuinely different crop with a very different rhythm.
As more Australian growers experiment with agave, it's creating a small but specialised skill set: reading a plant that most Australian farmers have never grown before.
