What "100% Agave" Actually Means

It's a small phrase on the label that says a lot about what's, and isn't, in the bottle.

"100% agave" means every fermentable sugar in the spirit comes from the agave plant itself, with nothing else added to bulk out the mash. It's a stricter standard than it sounds, since agave sugar is more expensive and slower to convert than cane or grain sugar.

The alternative, blending in cheaper sugars to cut costs, is common in the wider agave spirits category and legal within certain limits in some regions. It also produces a thinner, less characterful spirit.

Every Agave Australis bottling starts and ends with agave alone: grown on the Tablelands, roasted, fermented and distilled with nothing else added to the mash.
